Pool Crack Repair and Structural Fixes: Protecting Your Pool from the Ground Up
Finding a crack across your pool floor or tile line is one of a homeowner's most stressful discoveries. While superficial craze cracks in plaster are cosmetic, structural gunite cracks can cause continuous water loss, soil subsidence, and foundation movement if left untreated.
Surface Craze Cracks vs. Structural Cracks
Check/Craze Cracks (Cosmetic)
Fine, spiderweb-like cracks limited strictly to the top plaster coat. They are typically under 1/16th inch wide, do not leak water, and occur as the plaster cures or dries. Usually addressed during the next scheduled resurfacing.
Structural Cracks (Urgent)
Cracks that penetrate through the concrete gunite/shotcrete shell or follow bond-beam lines. They are often accompanied by rust stains from corroding rebar steel and measurable daily water loss.
Modern Structural Crack Repair Techniques
Simply smearing hydraulic cement or silicone caulk into a structural crack will fail within months due to thermal expansion and soil settling. Professional contractors use permanent engineering solutions:
- Carbon Fiber Staples (Torque Lock / Carbon Stitches): Holes are core-drilled on both sides of the crack, cross-channels are chiseled, and high-tensile carbon fiber staples are set in structural epoxy to physically hold the pool shell together under tension.
- Polyurethane / Epoxy High-Pressure Injection: Specialized ports inject water-activated polyurethane that expands up to 30 times its volume, creating an impermeable flexible seal from the inside of the crack out to the surrounding soil.
- Rebar Treatment: Exposed rebar is wire-brushed, treated with rust inhibitor, and coated in bonding adhesive before gunite patching.
